Animal Shelters vs Breeders

If I were looking to bring a pet into my family, I’d choose adoption over a breeder every time. There are so many amazing dogs and cats sitting in shelters waiting for someone to give them a chance. Many of them ended up there through no fault of their own, and I think it’s hard to ignore the fact that while breeders are bringing more animals into the world, shelters are already full of pets that need homes.

What I love about adopting is knowing that I’m not just getting a pet, I’m giving one a second chance. Plus, adoption is usually much more affordable. Most shelters include vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and health checks in the adoption fee, which can save a lot of money compared to buying from a breeder.

Don’t get me wrong, there are responsible breeders out there, but I personally feel better knowing I’ve helped an animal that might otherwise be overlooked. At the end of the day, a pet doesn’t care about pedigree papers or being purebred. They just want a safe home, a full food bowl, and someone to love them. That’s something every animal deserves.

Our children should not be a secondary consideration to adult services. The long-standing Homeless Men’s Shelter on State Street sits directly adjacent to East McDowell Middle School, creating a daily, unacceptable threat to student safety. Marion’s kids shouldn’t face erratic behavior on their walk to local classrooms. We are not safe, and our schools are not secure.
